I would just like to point out that many Ulster Catholics are infact of Italian descent not Irish descent. When Britain and Ulster were booming in the 19th century due to the industrial revolution and British Empire with its imense free trade area, it attracted immigrants from all over the world. Including Jews from Eastern Europe, French Heugonaughts and Italians who settled all over Great Britain including Ulster.

In fact Ulsters' economy was booming right up until the First World War and only really started to decline after the 1929 Wall Street Crash which led to world wide reccession. Incidently Dublin was the second richest city in the whole of the British Empire after London until the early 20th Century, so too attracted immigrants from around the world.

The Italians left there mark all across Britain and Ireland, they started ice cream businesses and cafes before most of them moved into mainstream businesses and became adsorbed into the general population. They kept their religon Catholic though and many can be traced through surnames.

Italians have been migrating to Northern Ireland since the 19th Century, and currently there are more than 1,600 people of Italian descent living there.

The numbers in the community might be relatively small, but this small community has had a large impact on one aspect of Ulster: its waistline! The Italians are well known for their food, particularly pizza, but that isn't what they will be remembered for in Northern Ireland.

The population of the island is slightly under six million (2006/7), with almost 4.25 million in the Republic of Ireland[4] (1.7 million in Greater Dublin[5]) and an estimated 1.75 million in Northern Ireland[6] (0.6 million in Greater Belfast [7]).
